The Wairoa Help and Information Centre has been built to assist our local users better understand their computers and the "Necessary Housework" that needs to be completed on a regular basis.
Gone are the days when we as computer users could happily surf the Internet, send the odd email and enjoy chatting with our cyber friends.
Now much of our precious "Internet Time" is spent protecting ourselves against the multitude of Parasites, Viruses and Worms that are doing their best to wheedle their way into our systems.
So while you are here, have a read through our help pages, learn why weekly computer maintenance is necessary and also how to complete it.

Latest Software Updates.
NB: Before installing any new software it is always tidier and safer to uninstall your old programs using Add/Remove found in Controll Panel first.
AVG 8 Anti Virus for Windows XP & Vista: The free edition of AVG 8 has now been released. This update is necessary as the current version 7.5 will cease to be supported in a couple of weeks. Click on the link and download from Download.com. When asked, select "Save to", and save it to your Desktop or remember where you have saved it for later installation. Once downloaded, double click on the AVG icon on your desktop and follow the installation process. Select next on each window which in turn will install the update. When asked, do not tick "Install Security Toolbar", as with any toolbar, this is an unnecessary intrusion and memory waster. Also unselect "Run on Computer Startup". Daily scans are not necessary for most. But in saying this, dont forget to do a full Virus Scan at least once a month. Full instructions may be printed out from our main menu on the left. Avast Anti Virus for Windows 98 & ME: For those of you still running Windows 98 or ME, AVG no longer supports these Operating Systems. Avast does and may be downloaded from Download.com. Save it to your Desktop. Once downloaded click on the icon on your desktop to install it. When asked if you wish to do a scan on each computer start, select no. Full Instructions and registration details can be printed from the main menu. Spybot 1.5.2: For those of you running Spybot check your version. Version 1.5.2 is the latest and can be downloaded from Spybot.com. Save to Desktop and run installation. I suggest you untick all boxes when asked as they are unnecessary. Once installed run Spybot as usual and dont forget to update it by selecting "Search For Updates". Full instructions are on our Menu on the left. Ad-Aware 2007 7.0: For those of you running Ad-Aware you can download the 2007 Version from Download.com also. If you do have an older version of Ad-aware our advice here is to replace it with Spybot 1.5. Our "in Workshop" testing suggests Spybot executes a better thorough scan and detection of spyware, malware, adware etc. Uninstall Ad-aware first in Control Panel - Add/Remove, before installing Spybot. Our movie review this week is "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, Science Fiction/Fantasy and Adaptation. Running Time: 1 hour 32 minutes. Rated: PG for intense adventure action and some scary moments. Editors Rating: B+ Editors Review: This flick is strictly kids' stuff, but with the 3D enticement, it makes for an enjoyable, lightweight good time. The Story Line: A science professor's untraditional hypotheses have made him the laughing stock of the academic community. But on an expedition in Iceland, he and his nephew stumble upon a major discovery that launches them on a thrilling journey deep beneath the Earth's surface, where they travel through never-before-seen worlds and encounter a variety of unusual creatures. Starring: Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, Anita Briem, Seth Meyers and Jean-Michel Pare. Line Speed Test

You will also gain a better idea of your speed when any other computers on your network are shut down. Select International Test to measure your speed to and from the United States.
